Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Ltd. (PFE) announced today that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the first prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment: sildenafil citrate (Viagra®).
ED is a common sexual disorder affecting millions of men worldwide and can lead to significant distress and psychological problems. The EMA approved sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) for ED treatment in 2012 and is now the most commonly prescribed ED treatment worldwide. Sildenafil citrate is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that is the first oral prescription drug to treat ED, and it is available in two strengths: 25mg and 100mg. The EMA also approved sildenafil citrate for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and ED. The first prescription drug to treat ED is sildenafil citrate (Viagra®), a medication which is available in a single dose for up to five years. Viagra® is currently the most commonly used drug for treating erectile dysfunction. The FDA has approved sildenafil citrate for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in males only. A new study shows the same drug is more effective than Viagra in men with erectile dysfunction. Viagra, made by Pfizer, is now the only FDA-approved medication for erectile dysfunction.

Irwin said he was surprised Viagra was more effective, but that it could have caused some side effects if it wasn’t for the drug’s ability to improve blood flow to the penis.
Viagra, sold under the brand name Cialis, has also been shown to have the same effect. According to a new study, Viagra can be effective in treating erectile dysfunction, but only if the patient is on a high dose of the drug, or if the patient is taking nitrates for chest pain, or if they have certain conditions affecting blood flow.
